Fenofibrate
Indications/Uses
Hypercholesterolaemia & hypertriglyceridaemia alone or combined (types IIa, IIb, III, IV, V dyslipidaemias); secondary hyperlipoproteinaemias.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take during meals. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Renal & hepatic insufficiency eg, biliary cirrhosis. Gallbadder disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Special Precautions
3 mthly monitoring of transaminase levels (discontinue if ASAT & ALAT levels is 3 times higher than normal). Patients treated concomitantly w/ HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors should be monitored for muscle toxicity.
Adverse Reactions
Digestive, gastric or intestinal disorders (eg, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea & flatulence). Skin rashes, pruritus, urticaria, photosensitivity reactions (eg, cutaneous photosensitivity), erythema, vesiculation or nodulation.
Drug Interactions
Oral anticoagulants, cyclosporin, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors.
